Shear Blades and Long Knives

Shear blades and long knives are precision machine knives used for the continuous or intermittent cutting of a wide range of materials. In shear cutting, the material is separated between two cutting edges: the upper shear blade passes the lower blade with a precisely defined cutting gap.
This shearing principle allows materials to be cut cleanly and efficiently with controlled cutting forces. The correct blade geometry, cutting angle and clearance between the upper and lower knife are important factors for achieving a consistent cutting result.
Shear blades are also referred to as shearing knives, guillotine knives, cross-cutting knives or long machine knives, depending on their design and application.
Shear Blades for Industrial Applications
Shear blades and long knives are used in many industrial cutting applications, including:

  • Metal processing and sheet metal cutting
  • Paper and cardboard processing
  • Plastic and film processing
  • Packaging production
  • Textile processing
  • Rubber processing
  • Recycling and material processing

In metalworking, long shear blades are commonly used for cutting sheet metal and other metal products. In other industries, similar cutting principles are used for thin materials such as film, paper, textiles and other flexible materials.
Materials for Shear Blades
The choice of material depends on the material being cut, machine conditions and the required service life.
Depending on the application, shear blades and long knives can be manufactured from:

  • Tool steel
  • High-alloy tool steel
  • High-speed steel (HSS)
  • HSS PM
  • Carbide

For demanding applications, materials with high hardness and wear resistance can provide longer service life and improved cutting performance.
Shear Blade Design
Shear blades can be manufactured in different lengths, thicknesses and geometries to suit the respective machine and application.
Depending on the cutting process, blades may have:

  • Straight cutting edges
  • Angled cutting edges
  • Special cutting geometries
  • Different cutting angles
  • Customized mounting holes and dimensions

The geometry of the upper and lower blades must be matched to the machine and material being processed. The correct cutting gap is also essential for achieving a clean cut while minimizing wear and cutting forces.
Long Knives for Industrial Machines
Long knives are used in machines where large cutting widths or long continuous cutting edges are required. Depending on the application, they can be manufactured as straight machine knives, shear blades, splitting knives or other customized knife designs.
We manufacture long knives according to customer drawings, specifications or samples, with dimensions and cutting geometries adapted to the individual machine.
Grinding and Regrinding of Shear Blades
Precision grinding is essential for producing a sharp and accurate cutting edge. Regular inspection and professional regrinding can restore the cutting performance of worn shear blades and extend their service life.
Depending on the knife design and remaining dimensions, shear blades and long knives can often be reground several times. This can reduce replacement costs and help minimize machine downtime.
Custom Shear Blades and Long Knives
We manufacture custom shear blades, long knives and industrial machine knives for a wide range of applications. Knife dimensions, cutting angles, edge geometries and mounting features can be produced according to customer requirements.
Send us your drawing, sample or technical specifications. We will be happy to advise you on the appropriate material, knife geometry and manufacturing solution for your application.
